Know of a great website, book or video resource that has enlightened YOU or empowered YOU to take action for people or the planet?  There are hundreds of thousands of videos, writings and websites out there for us to use.  Which resources address the roots of the myriad of issues we face and which would actually motivate people to take long term effective action?  For us in the Twin Cities, how do we best access these resources?

We need YOU to come and bring your experience, ideas and creativity.  We will create a guide, to be available online, for locals to quickly find works from authors and producers who have effectively analyzed our world and inspired us to action.  This collective writing effort will involve your brainstorming as well as some writing.  :-) Snacks provided!

Big Bucks, Big Pharma

Big Bucks, Big Pharma

Sunday, September 16th, 3 -€“ 5 pm
MayDay Bookstore, 301 Cedar Ave
Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood, Mpls

Big Bucks, Big Pharma (45 min, 2006) pulls back the curtain on the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry to expose the insidious ways that illness is used, manipulated, and in some instances created for capital gain.  Focusing on the industry's marketing practices, media scholars and health professionals help viewers understand the ways in which advertising glamorizes and normalizes the use of prescription medication.  Ultimately, Big Bucks, Big Pharma challenges us to ask important questions about the consequences of relying on a for-profit industry for our health and well-being.

Dr. Joel Albers, Pharm.D., Health Care Economics Researcher, Clinical Pharmacist and activist with Universal Health Care Action Network MN will help facilitate the post-screening discussion.

As part of our sustainability series, IMPACT will show a 50 minute video of a presentation given by Dr. Korten in April.  Korten outlines the coming of radically changing times; impending peak oil along with climate and economic crises that will deeply affect our culture.  Korten asks: will we shift our society away from a continuing quest for empire and towards a sustainable earth-based community?

Following the video, IMPACT will host a discussion exploring roles that we can play in moving towards sustainability.
